The Beginner’s Guide to Crystals

Crystals have been touted for their healing properties for centuries across a multitude of civilizations. They are effective in bringing calm, balance and healing. Quantum physics tells us every “thing” has a vibrational energy, including humans and crystals. Crystals are particularly good conduits of energy, and you can benefit from connecting to a crystal’s vibration.

In general, they promote the flow of good energy and help rid the body and mind of negative energy. In effect, helping to bring mind, body and soul in balance for optimal health. Crystals may sound woo-woo but they are accessible and powerful. This guide suggests 10 crystals to explore, how to choose one that is right for you, and how to care for them.

While crystals are connected to ancient forms of medicine, and spiritual practices found in Hinduism and Buddhism, it’s important to note that there is no scientific evidence to support the use of crystals for healing the physical body. Crystals, with their positive energetic qualities, beauty and magnetism can be a powerful addition to a meditation practice, mindfulness practice, or self-care intentions.

How to select your crystals:

When you work with crystals, it’s important to choose one(s) you have a strong intuitive connection with. How does it feel in your hand? Do you find the size and cut appealing? Are you drawn in by the color variations? When you read about the healing properties, does it resonate? Does it connect with what you want to manifest in your life? I strongly recommend buying crystals from a local, reputable source. It’s important to know where crystals are sourced and to authenticate them.

Here are 10 crystals to get you started:

Smokey Quartz: Smoky quartz is a manifestation stone that is varying shades of dark gray. It transforms negativity into positivity. Smokey quartz amplifies positive energy and protects against all forms of bad luck and energy vampires. It increases creativity and intuition.

Clear Quartz: Clear quartz is the most versatile crystal and great for a meditation alter as it amplifies the energies of other crystals placed near it. It is brilliantly clear, and is often used to cleanse, open, activate, and align all the chakras (energy centers in the body). It also improves clarity, concentration and balance.

Rose Quartz: Rose quartz is the crystal of the heart chakra. Pale pink in color, it emanates love, compassion, kindness, romance and self-healing. This is a beautiful crystal to use on your self-healing journey. Placed near Clear Quartz, its properties are magnified.

Selenite: Selenite is one of the softest crystals, but also very protective and powerful. It is opaque white in color and best used to clear blockages of negative energy, and to cleanse other crystals. Jade: Jade is a brilliant green stone that emanates a protective energy. It interrupts negative thought patterns and strengthens resolve. It’s a protective and strengthening stone that is great to use when you are facing a difficult conversation.

Turquoise: Turquoise is light to dark blue with a black marbling effect. It is the stone of personal power and prosperity. It encourages speaking your personal truth and giving voice to creativity. Turquoise calms as it empowers.

How to care for your crystals:

When you first bring your crystal home, it’s best to cleanse away any negative energy it may have picked up. It’s also a good idea to regularly cleanse it to keep its vibrational energy strong. There are several ways to cleanse your crystal (note: selenite does not typically need to be cleansed). Burn sage around the crystal and allow the smoke to envelop it to get rid of unwanted negative energies. You can also leave your crystal under the light of a full moon light. This allows natural light to filter through and cleanse.

Crystals can be a supportive addition to your self-care rituals. Their healing energy benefits the mind, body and soul by supporting balance and harmony. Wear a mala to boost confidence, sleep with one next to your bed for deep sleep, keep one in your car for protection, arrange a few on your meditation alter for an elevated practice, have one in your pocket to support grounding or in your bra to protect your heart. Find a way that works for you.

Working with crystals is highly individual and personal. What you are drawn to on an intuitive level will be different for a friend, partner or family member.
